There was plenty of stress getting this solar racing into 2nd place in Adelaide both 2023 and 2025!

Not every certification job involves a 4WD or a caravan. In 2023 and again in 2025, KME Vehicle Engineering provided engineering certification for the Twente team's solar car, competing in the World Solar Challenge — the biennial race from Darwin to Adelaide that draws elite university and international teams racing purpose-built solar-powered vehicles across roughly 3,000km of Australian outback.

A Different Kind of Vehicle (car) Certification

A solar racing car shares almost nothing with a standard road vehicle — ultra-lightweight composite construction, a single-occupant cockpit, and an engineering brief built entirely around aerodynamic efficiency and energy management rather than payload or towing capacity. Certifying a vehicle like this for the World Solar Challenge means working outside the standard 4WD and commercial vehicle frameworks, while still meeting the event's strict roadworthiness and safety requirements for a vehicle that will spend days on public highways as part of the race.

Why This Kind of Work Matters

Being trusted with certification for an international university racing team, across two separate World Solar Challenge events, reflects the kind of engineering credibility that doesn't come from routine work. It's a genuinely different discipline to a GVM upgrade or a chassis repair — but it draws on the same underlying engineering rigour: understanding structural and safety requirements deeply enough to certify a vehicle that doesn't fit a standard template.
