Project Spotlight: Nissan Patrol Y61 Cab Chop & Towbar Conversion

Some builds don't fit any standard category — this one involved converting a Nissan Patrol Y61 station wagon into a single-cab ute, with the chassis shortened by 450mm and the towbar re-engineered and welded back into place. Approved by NT Transport under VSB6, covering both the H4 chassis alteration and P1 towbar installation codes.

The Build: Wagon to Ute

Converting a station wagon body style into a single-cab ute isn't a bolt-on modification — it's a structural conversion involving genuine chassis work:

• Chassis shortened by 450mm to suit the new single-cab configuration

• Towbar removed, re-engineered and welded back into position on the modified chassis

• Front seats and factory mounting points retained from the original wagon

Certification: VSB6 H4 and P1

A structural conversion like this touches two distinct VSB6 modification codes. H4 covers the chassis alteration itself — the 450mm shortening and the structural integrity of the modified frame. P1 separately covers the towbar installation, since re-engineering and re-welding a towbar onto an altered chassis isn't a simple reinstatement — it needs its own verification that the mounting is structurally sound on the new, shorter chassis.
