Your total cost = engineering +shop install. The engineering certification component covers initial advice, assessment, testing and compliance sign-off. On top of that, a 4WD shop needs to supply and fit the actual suspension kit and any other required components; that install cost is separate and paid to the fitting shop, not the certifying engineer.

4WD shop install costs (parts and labour for suspension, brakes etc.) vary widely by vehicle and kit chosen. As a market guide: most common utes and 4WDs (Hilux, Ranger, D-Max, Patrol, 79 Series) run roughly $2,500–$10,000 fitted for the suspension kit and install, with premium builds (big lifts, coilover/air suspension, large American trucks) reaching well beyond that.

Heavy vehicles cost more to certify because they fall under VSB6 rather than VSB14 — a more involved standard covering additional testing (brakes, ESC, structural checks) that light vehicles don't require.

Pre-registration versus post-registration

Pre-registration is done before the vehicle is first registered, using the manufacturer's federal Second Stage Manufacture (SSM) approval. Certification is bundled into the kit price — generally the cheaper path.

Post registration is done on an already-registered vehicle, requiring individual engineering certification through your state's scheme.
