Modifying a vehicle in the Northern Territory
Vehicle modifications in the Northern Territory may require engineering assessment, certification, inspection and approval through the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR), depending on the vehicle and the modification.
The pathway is not the same for every job. Minor changes may have a simpler process, while significant or extensive modifications can require prior approval and supporting engineering before the vehicle can be accepted for registration.
1. Determine the pathway
Identify the vehicle, proposed modification and whether MVR approval or engineering certification is likely to be required.
2. Complete the engineering
Undertake the assessment, calculations, supporting evidence, modification work and inspection required for the project.
3. Complete the NT approval process
Provide the required engineering and vehicle documentation and complete the applicable MVR inspection or registration requirements.

Who approves vehicle modifications in the NT?
The Northern Territory Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) is responsible for the vehicle approval and registration process.Depending on the modification, technical assessment and certification may also be required from an engineer recognised by the NT Government.

Light vehicle modifications in the Northern Territory
Vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes GVM
Light vehicle modifications in the NT are generally assessed against the applicable requirements of VSB 14, together with Northern Territory administrative and approval requirements.

Heavy vehicle modifications in the Northern Territory
Trucks, buses and specialist vehicles
Heavy vehicle modifications in the NT commonly use VSB 6 as the technical framework, but the Northern Territory retains its own MVR approval and registration process.

GVM upgrades in the Northern Territory
A post-registration GVM upgrade increases the maximum permitted Gross Vehicle Mass of a vehicle that is already registered.
Whether an increase can be supported depends on the specific vehicle, target GVM, axle capacities, suspension, braking, wheels and tyres, available technical evidence and the applicable NT approval pathway.

A GVM increase does not automatically increase GCM or towing capacity.
