The Landcruiser 300 GR Sport Desert build

This LandCruiser 300 GR Sport project combined a defined Desert suspension configuration with vehicle-specific GVM, GCM and braked towing ratings through a pre-registration SSM pathway. The compliance certificate and SSM plate record a 4,000 kg GVM, 7,800 kg GCM, 4,000 kg braked towing capacity and five seats.

The important starting point was the complete vehicle configuration. The base vehicle, suspension, wheels, tyres, towing equipment and other relevant components must match the applicable approved requirements. A kit name alone does not establish eligibility.

Understanding the ratings

GVM, GCM, axle ratings and braked towing capacity are separate limits. Increasing one does not automatically increase the others. The vehicle and trailer combination must remain within every applicable limit, including wheel, tyre, towbar, coupling and trailer limits.

A 4,000 kg GVM and 4,000 kg braked towing capacity cannot both be fully used together under a 7,800 kg GCM. Actual loaded masses, axle distribution and towball download determine the usable margin. The lowest applicable limit controls.

The Desert Kit and accessories add vehicle mass and reduce the payload available for occupants and cargo. Fuel, passengers, luggage and towball load must also be allowed for. An increased GVM is not an equivalent increase in usable payload.

The result

The project produced vehicle-specific SSM documentation for the DESERT GR SPORT – 4.0 BTC configuration.

The work included upgraded front and rear springs, rear airbag assistance and retention of the original GR Sport shock absorbers, reverse-light and Category 6 indicator work.

Keeping the original shock absorbers was specific to this GR Sport configuration. It should not be assumed that the same component combination applies to another LC300 variant or mass rating.

These figures describe this particular build. They are not a blanket rating for all LC300s, and this five-seat Desert project should not be confused with a separate commercial cargo build.

Planning your LC300 build?

Contact KME Vehicle Engineering before ordering suspension, wheels, tyres, tow equipment or other major components. We can assess the proposed vehicle and intended use, confirm the applicable approved configuration and help avoid buying incompatible components.

Already registered? Available post-registration pathways depend on the vehicle configuration and registering jurisdiction. Engineering assessment and regulator acceptance are separate steps.
