How much does a GVM upgrade cost?
The cost depends on the vehicle, proposed GVM, required components, engineering scope, inspections, testing and jurisdiction.Total cost = engineering certification +shop install. Engineering certification starts anywhere between $1,990 and $5,990 depending on your vehicle type, complexity, and whether there are type approvals available in your state or territory. Shop installs vary from $2,500 to beyond $50,000 depending again on type of vehicle and modifications required/desired. Read more here in our guide "How much does a GVM upgrade cost?"
How do I get a GVM upgrade after the vehicle is already registered?
The process generally starts with an engineering assessment of the vehicle and proposed upgrade, followed by any required modifications, inspection, documentation and the relevant registration-authority process. Read more here in our "How to get a GVM upgrade" guide
Can KME Vehicle Engineering assess a vehicle outside Darwin?
Yes. KME Vehicle Engineering is based in Darwin and supports projects around Australia using remote engineering review and an inspection partner network where appropriate. The applicable certification pathway still depends on the vehicle and registration jurisdiction.
Can any vehicle have its GVM upgraded?
Not necessarily. Suitability depends on the specific vehicle, current ratings, proposed GVM, axle capacities, suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres, modification history, intended use and registration jurisdiction. KME Vehicle Engineering assesses these factors before recommending a pathway.
What is the difference between a light and heavy vehicle GVM upgrade?
The engineering and certification pathway depends on the vehicle category, proposed modification and registration jurisdiction. KME Vehicle Engineering provides GVM engineering for both light and heavy vehicles, with different standards and approval processes potentially applying.
Does a GVM upgrade increase GCM or towing capacity?
No — not automatically. GVM, GCM and towing capacity are separate limits. A change to one does not automatically change the others, and GCM or towing may require a separate engineering assessment.
